Economic commission gets $74,450 THE PROVINCIAL government has announced approval of $74,450 for the 1989 operations of the North Shore Economic Devel- opment Commission (NSEDC). Announced recently by all three North Shore MLAs, the funding is provided by Minister of Regional and Economic Development Stan Hagen through the Community Organizations for Economic De- velopment (COED) Program. Last year the provincial gov- ernment provided $23,500 in start-up costs for the NSEDC. The commission was incor- porated last August to direct the implementation of North Shore Economic strategies established by the North Shore Economic Devel- opment Advisory Committee. It also provides economic lead- ership for North and West Van- couver districts and North Van- couver City. West Vancouver-Howe Sound MLA John Reynolds said, ‘‘These funds will assist the commission in planning a number of research, marketing and promotional pro- jects to determine what direction economic development should take in the district.’’ North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jack Davis added that the commission undertook an in-depth survey of technology companies on the North Shore. “The survey highlighted the need for a directory listing the technology companies in the area,’’ he said, ‘‘and the commis- sion has since published this direc- tory.’’ The commission also purchased, a display booth designed to pro- mote locally a strong economic profile and to increase community awareness about the many business possibilities on the North Shore. Said North Vancouver-Capilano MLA Angus Ree, ‘Provision of this COED funding will allow ‘he communities of the North Shore to pursue economic growth suitable to the lifestyle and aspirations of the residential and business sec- tors.’’ Airport gets $669,872 CAPILANO-HOWE Sound MP Mary Collins recently announced a $669,872 federal contribution for the construction of two taxiways and turning points at both ends of the runway at Pemoerton Airport. The taxiways are expected to promote on-site development and provide increased revenues to off- set operating and maintenance costs. The turning points will elim- inate the current tight turning ra- dius and make it easier for larger aircraft to manoeuvre. The airport has a 1,200-metre paved runway, a paved apron, two concrete helipads, fenced aircraft parking area, tourist facilities and a weather station. It is certified for day VFR operations. “*The new taxiways and turning points are necessary because of in- creased tourism in the Pemberton area,”’ said Collins. ‘‘New com- mercial development and increased forestry and mining activities are also anticipated.”’ Since 1979, the federal govern- ment has provided Pemberton Airport with $2.2 million in funds for capital improvements. Pemberton Airport is located in southwestern British Columbia, 162 kilometres north of Van- couver. It is owned and operated by the Village of Pemberton. The funds for the present im- provements at Pemberton Airport are being provided through Trans- port Canada’s assistance program for local and local-commercial airports. 12 - Friday, December 15, 1989 ~ North Shore News i The Week's A FRESH APPROACH TO CHURCH 10am Sundays Delbrook Rec Centre 600 West Queens, North Van.
