py, as a helpful form of
treatment during illness, is
not always recognized by
hospital and health care fa-
cilities.

At UBC Health Sciences
Centre Hosgital, music ther-
apy has become an integral
part of treatment, clinical
practice and research.

North Vancouver resident,
Doreen Alexander, music
therapist in UBC's Depart-
ment of Rehabilitation Ser-
vices, has been using music
therapy to assess and treat
residents in the Extended
Care Unit.

Recently she has introduc-
ed music therapy in the
Acute Care Unit, including
the Respiratory Sleep
Disorder Laboratory. People

They have recently com-
pleted a study on the use of
music therapy in improving
the gait of those with
Parkinson's Disease.

Using a grant from the
hospital’s endowment fund,
they are embarking on

another study about the ef-
fect of music therapy on
pain, especially after
surgery.

Depending on the
availability of funds in the
form of grants and dona-
tions, the team would be
able to pursue further
studies in this area.
