C10 - Sunday News, September 6, 1981 QUESTION: There is a matter I have recently become interested in because of the facial ex- pressions and comments of my friends and acquain- tances when I let them know that I have no real interest in my family. It is not a subject I habitually bring up, but it has happened to become a part of my conversations recently in a most natural way. I am close to my wife and our two kids, but as far as my parents and brothers and sister are concerned there is no real interest or concern. There is no feud. We are not at loggerheads. It is simply that they quite happily go their ways and I, quite happily, go mine. My mother and father, who have heen divorced for some time are in Mexico and New Brunswick. My two brothers are in Utah and Saskat- chewan and my sister is in beautiful down-town Bur- maby. We rarely write. We even more rarely ‘phone and hardly ever see each other. My Burnaby sister, (if she still lives there) I have not seen for a couple of years. This arrangement is not a problem to me, nor, as far as A guide to pronounciation of names QUESTION: This fellow who wrote “A Conscious Person’s Guide to Relation- ships” and spells his name KEYES. How does he pronounce it? ['ve heard it said two different ways. You mentioned his book, can you Dronounce his name? STEWART: This fellow. I know, does it bother any of the others. I think they are not in touch with each other much either. I have just grown up that way and I suppose they did too. I have never been con- cemed or unhappy about it, but, as I say, just recently, (1 am sure by coincidence) people have looked at me strangely or said things to me that let me know they think there is something very odd about me. This has got under my skin a little, at least enough to make me wonder whether I am, in fact, a little bit out in left field. Our family was like this when we were all together. Everyone seemed to go his own way. We didn't fight much, as I remember, but we all learned the lessons of our parents to be our own selves and do our own who also wrote “How to Enjoy Your Life In Spite of It All,” pronounces his name Keyes, as in prize or cries or surprise. Do you think I am part of a weird family or is this ai fairly common situation? STEWART: If being slightly unusual makes you weird, then you are probably thought of as “part of a weird family”. I am not one, however, to think that being unusual makes one weird. I know some families that are very close to each other and loyal to each other and don't like each other a bit. That is not terribly unusual — but perhaps a bit weird. What think ye? It seems to mea lot has to do with what brought this about in your family. It seems reasonable to me that first of all, for some reason. you did not WANT to be close to each other and then, secondly, you _ trained yourselves rather skilfully _ask hayden stewart Freelance Counsellor Hayden Stewart may be reached at 261-624. for appotntments for individual family or group counselling name GOETHE. Seeing you are now in- terested in your unusual way of relating, or refraining from relating, you may want to do a little sleuthing to discover whether you are cheating yourse f. You may find you like your family a lot, or at least some of them, and that you can find a new dimension of love in your relationship with them. Curious? I'd love to see you give ita go.
