NORTH VAN CITY DECIDES No referendum for Sunday shopping No referendum will be held this fall on the subject of Sunday and holiday shopping in North Van- couver City. City council, meeting in- camera as a policy com- mittee, decided after a 40- Minute session Monday night to accept the provincial Bill 56 without any additions. This means that when the policy recommendation is accepted, City businesses will be subject to the provincial Bill 56 - the Holiday Shopping Act that comes into effect next year. The act” restricts businesses from opening on Sunday unless they = are included in a group specified by the legislation. City council last week requested a report on what businesses in the City, currently open on Sunday, would be forced to close by this legislation. This report was Considered in-camera. If municipalities wish to make any types of businesses not specified in the act excempt from Sunday closing, they must hold a referendum and this what the City had been con- sidering prior to Monday. A Holiday Shopping Regulation by-law was even on the agenda, but because of the policy decision no action was taken on it. However, council will request that the provincial government clarify who is responsible for the en- forcement of Bill 56. Mayor Jack Loucks said it was his understanding that the province and not the municipality will be responsible. Before holding the in- camera meeting, earlier in the evening, council heard a delegation from the Com- mittee Opposed to Sunday and Holiday Shopping. George Johnson asked the council not to hold any referendum and to give the provincial legislation at least QUALITY VITAMINS DISCOUNT SAVINGS Special OFFER Jojoba Shampoo 8 oz. *3.°° get an additional Your good health Is your most Important asset ... protect It ... 8 oz. tor only 1¢ VITAMIN DISCOUNT WAREHOUSE 312 E. He said that even if one municipality widened the scope of stores able to stay open on Sunday, by referendum, this would spread to other municipalities in the area. “I don’t think there’s any demand for Sunday shopping from the consuming public,” Johnson said. 26” COLOUR CONSOLE Tome corre cuCaour ture tube e PRGA SelectaVision VIDEO RECORDER NOW ATLOWLOW!
