A6-Wednesday, June 18,,1980 - North Shore News editorial page ee ee ne ee NEWS VIEWPOINT Hazards faced It’s nice, once in a while, to be able to pat our civic leaders on the back. The latest news about their progress in getting to grips with the problem of chemical hazards on the North Shore is heartening. The special committee set up by North Shore Chamber of Commerce to examine the chemical hazards situation produced an excellent preliminary report. This has now been taken up for more intensive study by North Van District's Community Hazards Task Force. And to show it means business, the task force has set itself a September deadline to come up with some firm solutions to the problem. The task force is chaired by widely respected community leader Derek Inman who also supervised the original Chamber of Commerce report. That's good continuity. Meanwhile, local police and fire depart- ments, the rescue service and the executives of the Hooker Chemicals plant are now all working positively on their specific roles in the event of an emergency we hope will never arise. The buck-passing has ceased. The drive is on by everyone concerned to make the North Shore as safe as humanly possible from accidental spills. Four months ago THE NEWS was accused of being “irresponsible” when it demanded release of the Beak Report and action of exactly the kind now being taken. The credit for providing the answers, will deservedly belong to the above-named groups. Meanwhile, THE NEWS is plad it asked those “irresponsible” questions. CANADA’‘s Day!
