Force bulbs for From page 16 Just foliow these simple steps 7 and watch your green thumb grow oan as spring enters your living-room. Use a clay, metal, plastic or any other favorite pot as !ong as it is at least 10 cm (4 in.) tall and has a drainage hole. Place a piece of broken clay, a few flat stones or even marbles over the hole, to con- tain the soil and permit drainage. Bulbs require good drainage so use a light soil. This can be achiev- ed by combining any kind of pot- ting soil with peat moss or soil-less mix. Fill the pot half-full. Next, place the bulbs on the top of the soil, with the tips just below the pot rim. Avoid pressing deeply into the soil, as this can damage the base and hinder root growth. Add more soil, stopping when the tops of the bulbs are still visi- ble. To ensure you don’t forget what has been planted and when, label each container stating the variety, color, planting date and removal date. Water well, cither from the top or by immersing each pot in water until the soil is moist. Try an unheated garage, shed or basement. Bulbs do not have to be kept in the dark, as gardeners once thought. While other, warmer countries can “‘plunge’’ pots — which means putting the potted bulbs directly into the ground — in most areas of Canada the climate is too cold to allow us to dig up the pots in mid-winter. But don’t let that deter you from being creative. Try plac- ing the pots in a plastic foam cool- er that has been lined with insula- tion ial. Surround the pots with ‘raw or other organic matter; Cufow the basic forcing guidelines; cover the containers and water twice a week. By the end of the storage period, the bulbs should be showing good root growth (i.e. visible through the drainage hole} and little sprouts (about 5 cm or 2 in. high). At this point, move them into the house or office to a spot where they can get full daylight. Place them in a cool location each night to make them last longer.
