A recent survey con-
firms 1998 findings
that, in spite of intense
and widespread infor-
mation campaigns,
unprotected sex is still
widely practised, partic-
ularly in the gay com-
munity.
One obvious reaction is

.. that this is irresponsible,

increasing the spread of AIDS,

_ augmenting treatment costs,
and mocking prevention

efforts.

The number of unwanted
pregnancies and sexually trans-
mitted disease statistics among
heterosexuals attest that un-
safe sex is not confined to
homosexuals.

And why, in spite of a
plethora of information, do so
many people, particularly
youngsters, practise health-
destructive habits in weir
choice of foods, smoking,
drinking, and lack of exercise.
Maybe they believe, as may
some homosexuals, that cures
will be found before any result-
ing disease affects them seri-
ously. Or perhaps they are
reflecting a huge death wish in
our increzsingly stressed and
insecure society. For homosex-
uals there are other considera-
tions. Gays and lesbians are
generally viewed primarily, or
even exclusively, on a sexual
basis. When people think of
prominent known homosexu-
als, the first, or one of the first,
thoughts that may pop into
their minds is that person’s sex-
ual preference, not his or her
other attributes — contribu-

tions, talents, potendals. In the -

minds of many, homosexuals
become one-dimensional.

Women too have long been
seen primarily or exclusively as
sexual beings rather than as
complete people.

To one degree or another,
we all internalize socicty’s view
of us. The result is that many
homosexuals (and women) see
themselves largely as sexual
beings rather than complete
people for whom sexuality is

part of their lives. This
accounts, for example, for the
role of fashion and cosmetics in
the fives of many women and
for the centrality of sex in the
lives of many homosexuals.
The relatively larger number of
sex partners they have is one
manifestation. Disregard for
possible consequences of
unprotected sex may be anoth-

er. Alongside this consideration
is the saill-widespread bigoted
views regarding homosexuals.
Debates which invariably fol-
low proposals for acknowledg-
ment of homosexuality in
school resource material reveal
the distaste with which gays
and lesbians are often viewed
in our society. The bearings
and murders and the open

insults to which they are sub-
jected are more horrifying
examples. Whatever the reac-
don to the survey, it should
not inhibit the search for an
AIDS cure. Contagion, in
Canada or anywhere else in the
world cannot be confined to
particular groups. It is democ-
ratic in that it makes no dis-
tinctions; it threatens all of us.
