Van family on the street Michael Becker Newsroom Editor mibecker@nsnews.com A North Vancouver family displaced by fire is looking for a place to live in the neighbour- hood they called home for the past LI years. A 2 am. blaze recently gutted the home of the Drove family in the 600-block of East St. James Road. John Drove and his 80- year-old mother managed to escape without harm after a car alarm alerted Drove to the fire. Because the smoke was contained to the carport in the centre of the house, smoke detectors elsewhere did not alert those sleeping inside. Mother, son seek home in Carisbrooke The fire started in the car- port, where the family’s mini- van was parked. The cause of the fire remains under investi - gation. The family’s dog Jackson, a standard poodle, two love birds and a budgie died in the fire. Tatsy the cat escaped. The family is staying with good friends in the Upper Lonsdale area. Said Debbie Drove, “We feel the family has suffered an incredible loss and for our son (Jonathan, 15) it’s really important that he stays at the school and he stays with his circle of friends. We would like to remain in the community.” The Droves are looking to rent three bedrooms in the Upper Lonsdale neighbour- hood, within the Argyle catchment area. “We don’t need anything big because we've got no furniture feft,” said Debbie Drove. Jonathan is ready to go into Grade 11 at Argyle this year. Meanwhile Argyle gradu- ate Samantha Drove, 17, is going to Florida Southern College on a soceer scholar- ship. She should have left a week ago yesterday bur has had to delay the wip because of the fire. “Twant to leave when everything is settled with the family,” she said. Call 983-3750 to help the Droves.
