Literally. “The girh were out doing some medicine ball work near Riverside last month when lightning struck an electrical power line right beside the field they were on.” Blues head coach Greg Zavediak was saving the other dav. “It was so close that all cheir hair stood straight up.” The fourth-vear coach hopes that pre-season: experi- ence is a harbinger for more hair-raising times, though preferably of the kind con- fined to the hardcourt. His team —- along with the men Blues — gets its farst caste of cager action this weekend as it hosts the Fourth Annual Blues Classic Tournament, one of the largest’ provincial college basketball tourna- ments this season. Zavediuk’s team played a game last weekend — a 80-64 win over Camosun on Saturday — but this week- end’s tournament will be the first intense game situation for his young team. And young they are. Just ovo players are returning trom last. year’s team, which fin- ished fifth in league standings but lead the league in scoring. The two returning players are both guards. “That’s just part of the chalienge of coaching in the college league at a two-year school,” Zavediuk said of bringing 10 new players into the fold. In addition to the difficult task of building a completely i new toa, the coach has to be able to adjust his own style of same. For cxample, List vea Zawvediuk was blessed with a quick, theugh small, teara. ‘Lo take advantage of that speed he adepred a run and gun efiense sadh plea of three point sheonng Fone ar the reasons bix team topped ICI SCOPIUE T. “This vear werre ROL quite as quick but wevre detinitely bigger than fast: seasan,” he reports, “But that’s why is such a fantastic cosching chal lenges vou have to be able to adjast vour game style from vear to vear™ This season he sti plains to Use speed as ai offensive weapon, but will work the bail into his forwards and) post position mere often, In othe three seasons Zavediuk as guided tie Blues they've tinished fitth, tirst andl fitth in the regular season feague standings. One thing going for Zavediuk and assistants Valerie Ho and Cory Neilson this season is something no amount or quality of coaching can provide. “We're getting people out who love to play basketball,” Zavediuk says. “And thev’re all very talented.” North Shore bigh school hoop tans will recoguize many new Blass. includmy Argvte wrad Jen Wickson, Sutherland’s Melissa Moore and Windsor graduates Alison Jenkins, Christina Kiperchuk and Gillian ‘fhoviy.
