Michael Wing and Sophia Gerodimos became disorient- ed and lost in the area when darkness fell. North Shore Rescue's Tim Jones who was also the search manager during Wednesday's six-hour search said hikers often misjudge Lynn Canyon Park’s deceptively large area. He added that hikers should be aware of sunset times and aot an extra hour when in areas with a tree canopy. The couple had a cellular phone with them and man- aged to phone 1 friend and leave a message outlining their plight. Upon picking up the message, the friend contacted the RCMP which called out North Shore Rescue. The lost couple could near the rescue personnel in’ the area and contacted the RCMP using the phone, but were unable to give their location before the phone’s battery died. “That is the upside and downside of cell phones,” said gon. Jones. “People should not rely on cell phones to get them out of trouble because the phones are at their lowest (battery charge) point at night ... a cell phone can be a good tool but also a false security blanker.” Jones said all hikers should be prepared for the wilderness by bringing at least warm clothing and an operationa! flashlight and Jet someone know their planned destina- + Robert Galster Dr. Beri ice is pleased to announce the opening of the Seymour Denial centre.
