High-temperature taverna From page 28 Anayiotos also turns his hand to such enduring Greck favorites as Moussaka, Stuffed Eggplant, Pastichio and Souvlaki. Appetizers, hot and cold, are what make Greek dining such an instantly appealing banquet at any time of day. At Mythos, * you need ven- ture no further for a satisfy- ing dining experience. You could order any num- ber of plates and combina- tions (stuffed charbrailed squid with sauteed tiger prawns, kalamari and maybe a dish of tarama — wonder- WDAR A fully tart fish roe pate — with a stack of hot-buttered pita bread and a side of marinated octopus, for example). Or better still, order a Afythos mixed platter (seafood or other — $27 to $30) and leave the combination assort- ment to the kitchen. Either route is an excel- lent introduction to Greek dining. The taverna’s wine list (S17 to $50) takes in most of Europe. swith excursions to California, B.C. and Australia. On a recent Friday night, Table Hopping’s male con- tingent discussed vital sport- ing matters over hearty plat- ters of lamb and wild boar. Both plates were outfitted with heavy rations of Greek salad (good selection of sweet cucuntber, tomato, Wack olives and shavings of tresh Feta cheese), rice and roast potatoes. The boar meat was ap interesting departure from lamb of pork — almost a cross between the two, with a touch of venison flavor tossed in. It was served in thick cutlets, tender and sweet. Less rich than pork, burt with more flavor. No crashing boar this. The reast lamb, too, was heaped high aboard the plate. Man-sized meals both — especially after downing the soup special, which combined an Avgolemono (chicken broth, rice, egg and lemon) base with hetty rice-studdded meatballs. A winning combination. We digested the full Mythos experience adjacent to the raverna’s roaring fire place, wreathed in sense-sur- round Greek music, and attended to by Merbas’ team of attentive Waiters and Mr. Angelopoulos himself. Phe latter is on the go continu: ously from the crack of the starting pistol to the close of business. His attention to guests is engaging and laudable —- legwork that reaps a host of benefits, not the least of which is oval pacronage. On our Friday night visit, the dining room was full, and a fineup filled the entrance- way. The less-patient departed into the grim grey evening — deprived of their soul-warnm- ing shot of Mythas. A real Greek tragedy. a es oe Dining on crow: On oceasion, when the eye is nor on the ball, errors call for Table Hopping statf to cat a sampling of crow. Or nwo. Only one of the interested buyers in the group was trom the North Vancouver hotel.
