TWO-year-old twins Jason and Justin Rochford enjoyed a wagon ride through
Victoria Park West after one of the snowfalls to recently hit the North Shore. Rain
washed the white stuff away the next day.

Condos drive up 97 stats

PROVINCIAL housing stats for December
totalled 1,901 units, an increase of just over
1% compared to one year before, according to
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
(CMHC).

Despite the poor performance of the single
family market throughout 1997, the multiple
nit market has managed to propel housing
starts to a 2% increase over 1996 levels. In 1997
a toral of 25,210 units started compared to
24,744 units started in ‘96.

“The Metro Vancouver multiple unit marker
continued on a brisk pace this month and shows
no signs of faltering in 1998." sai Ladan

Ahmadzadeh-Yousseti, market analyst — at
CMHC's B.C. and Yukon Region Business
Centre. “The single family market, after never
really gaining momentum this vear due to esca-
lating development construction costs and
increasing land prices, saw starts levels continue
their slide in December,” she added.

Housing starts in Metro Vancouver reached
1,218 units in December, up almost 3% from a
year ago. But compared to November, markets
have slowed significantly. Nationally, housing
starts remained relatively stable increasing co a
scasonally adjusted annual rate of 152.406 units
trom 152,109 units in November.
