Why do cats often head for the

The best explanation is this:
Cats uvoid anyone who stares at
them. Cat lovers tend to do this,
along with the “Here pudiy-
puddy.”* The cat feels threatened
by the stare and backs off.

Cat haters tend to avoid looking
at 2 cat, hoping it night go away.

Was it Cole Porter who wrote,
“Summertime, and the livin’ is
easy’? I don’t know where the
author was ‘“‘livin’’ but it sure as
heli wasn’t anywhere close to a
kitchen. Somzone ought to write
the “Hot Stove and Choppin’
Block Blues.””

Summer cocking is a pain in the
butt. Everyone loves picnics — ex-
cept the guy who makes the food.
Barbecues are fun —- except for
anyone who has to make the
salads, marinate the meat and haul
the stuff inside and outside.

Meanwhile, we try to use our
ovens as little as we can, keep the
barbecue sauce off the rug and the
kids out of the fire.

Let’s compromise a bit. Here’s
an old favorite corn recipe that
you cai make the night before. It
bakes quickly and has a wonderful
affinity to grilled salsion.

This is one of my all-time win-
ners. It’s one of those recipes that

‘80 good.
% cup each: diced onion and green

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

Y% teaspoon dry mustard

salt, pepper and paprika to taste

% cup milk

2 cups corn - use canned, drained
(freeze the juice for gravy!), frozen
kerneis or fresh ({00 much work).

1 egg, lightly besten

Crumb tepping:
% cup butter, melted
% cap fine dry breadcrumbs
(Optional): finely diced hard
sausage such as salami, % cup
grated Parmesan, crumbled potato
chips - usc your imagination.
