The question of how to get them involved in baseball, and not make it too structured, was the challenge. One of the major turn-offs was the pitcher. Often selected as the biggest kid in the area, that meant TRADE they could probably throw harder than young batters could cope with. If a batter was finding that baseball meant eitver striking out or getting hit with a pitch, it was not difficult io walk away from the game. tnter “Rookie League” and exit the pitcher. There are no pitchers in Rookie League. Instead, there is a pitching machine which throws the ball over the plate every time, at a 2ND ANNUAL speed determined to be hittable for the average youngster. Rookie League is successful in the United States as an outstanding method of teaching youngsters the game of baseball. These organiza- tions have realized the need to put fun back into the game of baseball. For more information on improving your coaching skills, contact Baseba!! Canada at (613) 748-5606.
