YOU KNOW, we are an astonishing bunch. Never in the
world has there been a [ayer like ourselves, carrying in our
memories and the lines on our faces experience that ranges
from the simply primitive through to today’s technology.

And it’s all vanished, except in
remote enclaves of aboriginals,
perhaps, We straddle lifetimes
unique in history. Never before us
has there been such a gallop, so
rapid an evolution of applied in-
telligence.

When you think about our up-
bringing, our youthful restrictions,
the meagre temptations and the
paucity of any sort of entertain-
ment outside of home base, it’s
easier to understand our present
state of bewilderment. That sim-
plicity determined who we are
now, how we think, what we
respect and what we fear.

That’s why we come unglued
watching some of today’s youth.
And listening. Hoo boy.

Those of us who grew up in the
backwoods have had to make the
biggest jumps. We were sitting
around talking about it at
Marparet Fulton Centre, and after
just a couple of hours spent
reminiscing together, one of the
men, from a prairies background,

turn out, we realize how many
compromises we’ve had to make
and that most of us don’t really
know the way amy more.

We had expected a quite dif-
ferent route, to fell the truth, and
we had no idea our equipment
would prove so stale and un-
fashionable so fast.

We could adapt to part of it,
some of us more easily than
others, but we've been tossed and
tumed by an overwhelming deluge
of changes that have left us
breathless and boggled.

Some of it we never in the
world will understand or agree

’ with, and this constant need to

defend our inner selves keeps us
off balance.

It can’t be doing us any gcod to
be always biting our tongues. And
it sure takes a lot out of an old
body to have to constantly
dissemble.

Our real need is to yell ‘‘Stop!
Look what you’re doing to the
children!"”

required to be soft, and they’re -
not comfortable with it.

produce, to prove they can do
that too, so there, are promptly
dropped into the arms of nannies.

Nannies — good ones — are
jewels, but only as adjuncts to the
mother’s presence.

Whose values are being in-
culcated when the child spends all
day with an outsider?

The family flywheel beromes
the television set, which has its
own agenda. Its lessons are
unbelievably siraple, and
unbelievably unreal.

There is mounting acceptance of
out-of-wedlock babies.

Boy, there’s a term you haven’t
heard for years. And the common
public purse, not the daddies, is
expected to be their support.

Another dilemma lies with the
sperm bank, from which are born

chikiren whose fathers are
numbers on an inventory. Herein
lies a future of antisocial behavior -
as children grow up with fathers
who don’t know they exist.

Divoree, once th prerogative of
kings, is commonplace. Heroes,
once kings of valor and self--
sacrifice, are sports figures being
paid outragcous sums, their cou-
puterized statistics the real arena.

Royalty plays now as a kind of
expensive theatre, anc for us who
remember Queen Mary’s .
unassailable dress and ber hats,
it’s become a painfully shabby
scene.

That’s what is really at the root
of our unease as the elders — we
feel ket down. The achievements
can’t be denied — men on the
and specd we'd never imagined —

-but the homeless multiply, the

world’s wealth is misapplied and
we're glad we're as old as we are.
