THE WELFARE system in B.C.
is close to collapse with a
record number of people in
need of social assistance.
This year the province's
income assistance programs
cost $1.5 billion. One in 10
British Columbians is on
welfare.

In a weekly random survey of more
than 500 North Shore residents, the
Narth Shore News survey team
asked the peopie: Should it be more
difficult to collect welfare?

Of those who responded, 55% said
Yes, 15.2% said No, 24.3% said they
did not know and 5.5% had no opin-
ion on the matter.
