Emphasize investment to improve Dear Editor: Regarding Noel Wright’s col- umn ‘‘Why !1% jobless? (part 2)” of July 17: In his simplistic and fatuous explanation for 11% unemploy- ment in Canada, Noel Wright cer- * tainly practises what he preaches: “Dream on.” His reasoning seems to be as follows: the private sector’s machines have replaced manual workers as the producers of goods. These permanently displaced workers have no discre- tionary income to fuel economic growth, i.e., through personal consumption. Mr. Wright’s cure, in his words: «clearly the only way to solve permanently this excess of work- seekers over society’s paid work needs is to pay for worthwhile work that does NOT pay for itself or make a profit in doliar terms.” Who would pay for the above work? Certainly not our country which is losing the battle against a $430 billion debt. Where does Mr. economy Wright get his figures from? It is impossible to quantify the dollar value of household tabor. it is the same with exercise or good nutrition; these are intangibles. In summation, Mr. Wright rhe- torically asks: ‘*...if you’ve any other cure ... please tell us.’’ So 7 it. How about exports and an emphasis on investment instead of consumption? The gentleman should do some reading on the economic successes of Germany, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Holland, among others. Mr. Wright’s facctious solutions are characteristic of a North America that embraces saviors with quick and easy panaceas to age-old problems. Your columnist has obviously bought into the Judy Rebick/Maud Barlow/Mel Hurtig/Audrey McClaughlin/Bob White school of economic mis- information. I hope for Canada’s sake that he’s in the minority. Christopher Lambert North Vancouver Charge for rescue expenses Dear Editor: Once more some idiot en- dangers the lives of rescuers and gets away with it! It is time to assess the cost of each rescue and charge the person responsible with all the expenses involved. Stephanie James, who recently fell from the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge, is old enough to know better, and the message to all the young people who can- not read or choose [to ignore the well-posted signs in the park should be: ‘‘You will be charged and held responsible for your misconduct."’ B. Cowan North Vancouver NORTH VANCOUVER coun- ‘cll have recently reconsid- eved a proposal! to amaiga- mate the City and District. Advocates of the plan argue that there may be savings If The. tax wan wonders \F You have. anything o to declare ¢ Group homes should be integrated Dear Editor: In response to recent letters published in the News regard- ing Lynn Vatley’s supposed opposition to group homes, I would like to clarify certain issues. Lynn Valley has been por- trayed as an = ‘‘unaccepting community,'’ but in actuality, it is home to two-thirds of the district's group homes for handicapped people. Lynn Valley welcomes over 100 residents in 19 group homes, and these residents are an integrated part of our community. As a Lynn Valley resident, I would like to sce this integra- tion become a part of all the communities in North Van- couver and to hear that other areas are welcoming handi- capped residents in group homes to join their neighbor: hoods too. Let our district residents and the councii that represents them start with a policy that spreads all future group home sites evenly around the district. C. Andrews North Vancouver municipal staff and servie- es for both municipalities were pooled. The North Shore News recently polled North Vancouver residents on this issue. We asked 267 peo- ple “Would you be in favor of amalgamating North Van City and North Van District? One hundred respondents (37.4%) said “Yes," while 75, or 28.1%, said they were not in favor of amalgamation. 17.6% had no opinion and 16.9% did not know. 1 WEEK SPECIAL 20% OFF ALL BRAKE REPAIR LABOUR OFFER VALID AT ALL LOWER MAINLAND LOCATIONS Sale price in effect Aug. 9 - Aug. 15, 1992 CUSTOM DRAPERIES AND VALANCES labour $7.50 per panel ‘unlined, $8.50 lined CUSTOM BEDSPREADS AND COVERS ee Low, low prices on blinds and tracks For FREE Estimates Call 987-2966 Serving the North Shore for 22 years * Based on national independent surveys of total visits made to suto service centres for ten major services In Canada, by ISL international Surveys Ltd.
