F irst of four gypsy moth assaults hits N. Shore over Easter weekend receive THE NORTH Shore was showered with the first of up to four aerial and ground doses of bacterial insecticide over the weekend. While a helicopter sprayed the Capilano watershed area Saturday as part of Agriculture Canada’s program to eradicate the Asian gypsy moth, residents awoke to the drone of low-flying DC-6 spray planes early Sunday and again on Tuesday morning. Weather permitting, the next aerial and ground round to spray Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) will start in about 10 days. Under ideal weather conditions By Michael Becker News Reporter each phase of the aerial applica- tion should take two days. The DC-6 planes cover a 17,760-hectare area that includes the entire North Shore and parts of Vancouver and Burnaby. A helicopter is used to spray 1,003 hectares, and about 850 hectares of the target area ground-spray treatment. The Agriculture Canada Asian gypsy moth eradication program has progressed smoothly, accord- ing to moth program spokesman Bruce D’Andrea. The first phase of ground spraying on the North Shore, which is focusing on wooded and residential property in the Lynn Valley area, wraps up this week. On Tuesday, approximately 60 ground spray applicators worked from dawn to dusk in Stanley Park, Vanier Park, the upper Lynn Valley area and around Vancouver’s Alberta Wheat Pool. “It’s going to take us longer than the aerial spraying because it is a little bit more labor-intensive. We’re going full tilt, and then there will be a down time on that because it is going in stages, too,” said D'Andrea. The three DC-6 pianes drop one load of Btk per morning. Each plane holds about 11,000 litres of Btk, enough to cover about 3,000 hectares. Said D’Andrea, ‘‘At one point we felt there could be time to do a bit of a reload. But for instance this morning (Tuesday) we got up in the air at about 5:32 (a.m.), and we finished at about 6:45 a.m. So there really isn’t enough time to go back to Abbotsford.’’ See SPEC page & index @ Budget Beaters BS Classified Ads .... @ Comics & Frugal Gourmet @ Lifestyles @ North Shore Now. ®@ What's Going On....
