Best of 1991 From the ghost of Marley to The Ghosts That Haunt Me ORTHWITH THE toppermost of the _ poppermost of 1991: The KLF — The White Room, Arista/BMG Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW Two English guys skip through the house of hip hop, walk off with heads full of odd interior decorating ideas and come up with a very interesting white rsom. This Mortal Coil — Blood, 4AD/PolyGram Ivo Watts-Russell, 4AD record label head.and producer af this project, brings us something marked by alternately elegant and endearingly naive sentiments, Fresh female voices dominate — Pixies’ Kim Deal, Caroline Crawley of Shelleyan Orphan, Throwing Muses’ Tanya Donelly and Deidre Rutkowski, cover versions of songs by composers including Mary Margaret O'Hara, Syd Barrett and Rodney Crowell. Jimmie Dale Gilmore — After Awhile, Elektra/Warner Discovering this Lubbock, Texas country original is an experience akin to stumbling upon Hank Williams or Roy Orbison for the first time. Most closely associated with Butch Hancock and Joe Ely, Gilmore solo shines with an authenticity all too rare in most modern music heard, regardless of the genre. Circle C, Geffen/MCA The much-anticipated debut from this Vancouver banc sounds like some long-lost classic rock album circa early 1970s. It’s pow- eriul, enigmatic and addictive. The La’s, Goi Discs/PolyGram The young Liverpudiians are anointed with the cachet of Beatles pop godhead. te this case the hyperbole is warranted. Singer, songwriter and puitarist Lee Mavers nails down a mercurial pop sound and draws on the spirited raw brashness of pre- psychedelic 1960s British pop with great success. John Campbell — One Believer, Elektea/Warner Scary blues stop you dead in your tracks and tingle the bones, Louisiana-born Campbell, inthi- enced by the likes of Lightnin’ Hopkins, has released a powerful set. The bluesman growls through the chillers and stakes his territory at the point between despair and deliverance. The Harper Brothers — Artis- try, Verve/PolyGram This sextet of youny New York- dase beboppers prove themselves dett and intuitive players. Drummer Winard Harper and trumpeting brother Philip Harper grew up in Baltimore ab. sorbing the music of Max Roach, Wynton Kelly and Cliffard Brown. Antistry shimmers with energizing jazz fireworks, true hard-bop chops. Pixies — Trompe Le Monde, 4AD/PolyGram The Pasies’s abrasive surter-sci- fi-punky-B-movie shockrock is about the best thing hurtling down the pike in these desperate days. Black Francis’ raging antics have us smelling the smoke from a gun named extinction. Oh yeah, there’s a neat song about sea monkeys too. The live discs cap- ture the essence of the brilliant live show brought to Vancouver earlier this year.
