Shallow roots will be at a soil level that dries out very quickly, thus depriving the grass plants of needed water, and they soon die. Infrequent, deep watering in the early mornings or evenings will help the plant establish adequate roots and provide sufficient moisture between watering. To determine when to water, probe the soil with a screw driver, or even better, use a probe that removes a core of soil at feast 10-15 cm (4-6 in.) deep. When the soil is dry or the probe is difficult to insert into the ground, it’s time to water. Probing should be done in sev- eral locations around the garden because some soil areas may hold water better than others. Tree- shaded areas may not need as much water, while areas near heat-reflecting buildings, or adja- TIL 6x6 ee aarkes” 59%. * 391 ee a “ cent to concrete or other pave- ment will dry out faster. If high-efficiency, in-ground ir- Tigation, with automatic con- trollers is not possible, the home- owner should use the largest (in- side) diameter garden hoses avail- able. The sprinklers should be a type that deliver large water drops and not a fine mist which evaporates easily. Uniform sprinkler patterns are also impor- tant to avoid dry spots in one area and run-off in anothe-, just by a single sprinkler. The need for a good quality sprinkler cannot be emphasized too strongly. When watering is done, the ob- ject should be to moisten the soil to a depth of 10-15 cm. The amount of time needed to do this depends on a number of factors: soil type and density, water pressure, type of sprinkler, and the presence of lawn thatch. Gen- erally, the sprinkler will need to Laiex Flat House Paint A durable house paint that goes On smoothly and (09 easily. temain in one position for at least an hour to attain this needed penctration. A further important factor is the height of cut for the grass. Though horticulturisis have urged cutting the grass high for several decades, only now with water shortages is it beginning to be re- alized just how important the height of cut is. After the grass is cut, the blade height should be approximately five cm, or two inches. That seems high, and may mean the grass needs cutting slightly more frequently. But, cutting the grass more frequently is another plus in helping reduce water needed to keep turf green. By cutting more frequently, the actual clippings may be left on, and this helps provide organic plant food for the grass plants, and does NOT con- tribute to thatch buildup. Eggshell Latex Enamel!
