AFTER STRUGGLING for years
with heavy doors and tightly-seal-
ed containers, | decided to head
down to the local weight room to
bulk up.

Iwas roughly 28 at the time, and
not just your average 100-pound
weakling. For three years | had
been suffering with rheumatoid ar-
thritis, a chronic, debilitating pro-
gressive disease that causes in-
flammation and stiffening of the
joints.

The point of the weights wasn’t
to become the next Arnold
Schwarzenegger but to build
strength, become more flexible,
and increase my range of motion.

Gentle exercise, | discovered,
was a godsend to paintul, stiff
joints and aching muscles.

And that’s why books like Gwen
Ellert’s The Arthritis Exercise Book
are so important. Ellert is a Van-
couver nurse who has suffered
from) rheumatoid arthritis since
1973.

In her back. she outlines basic
steetch and strengthening —tech-
“niques, gentle joint-by-joint exer-
cises and helpful dos and don'ts to
make everyday living less painful.

For long-time arthritis sufferers,
don't expect anything — revolu-
tionary here — the exercises and
advice will sound like old hat by
now. However, Ellert makes the
crucial point that by maintaining a
sensible exercise program, mus-
cles surrounding a joint will be less
likely to weaken and waste away.
Strong muscles take excess stress
off overburdened sore joints,
which often diminishes pain,

Ellert should take credit for mak-
ing what might appear to some as
a daunting task, easy. She achieves
this by using simple diagrams and
instructions.

The Arthritis Exercise Book is
especially helpful to those just
embarking on an exercise pro-
gram. Those with — established
routines can also benerit: Eflert
points out the dangers to joints
caused by improper daily exercise,
the wrong exercise, or too much
Ol any one exercise.
