The Vancouver jazz scene is secing re-invig-
oration thanks to a wave of talented voung
artists willing to take artistic risks.

Sax player Jon Bentley's trio Diversions is among the best
of such groups to watch for. Bentley, Chris Gestrin on key-
boards and Bernie Arai on drums are joined by Brad Turner,
guesting on trumpet in this 1998 release.

Bentley plays tenor and alto saxophones and composed
nine of the 10 tracks on the dise. The closing track Gullptsion,
is a yroup composition.

Diversions dabbles in funk, clectrie jazz and free-form
improvisations. Bentley looks to early electric Miles Davis,
John Zorn’s Masada, Metalwood, and Herbie Hancock tor
some of his inspiration.

Duo performs in W. Van

THE Stuck Up Marys (Carmen Schreyer and Natalie Anne
Lanoville) are scheduled to perform Saturday night, 8 p.m. at
West Vancouver's Galleria Ambleside, 1545 Marine Dr, (922-
4694).

The duo play contemporary folk music with strong, mclodi-
ous vocal harmonics. Keith Gillard, of Liquid Records, describes
their music as “cubist folk... folk seen from ali angles”.

Smith took up his first guitar at six. T. Bone
Valker, Freddie King and Chuck Willis were
the ones to emulate and he seen turned ro
busking. What separates this 60-year-old
Texas bluesman trom the herd however is
his penchant for lap steel guitar, an instru-
ment more at home on a country stage than
in the arena of blues.

Rhodes writes most of the tracks on this
release. Thanks to a touring schedule of
about 250 shows a year, there’s plenty of
honest road grit in the story telling.

The Sonny Rhodes Group plays in Gastown June 27 during
the du Maurier International Jazz Festival Vancouver.

Two days worth of free music are on tap on Water Street.
Sonny Rhodes hits the stage on Sunday for a set from 4:30 to
§:30 p.m.

Representing the City of Champions, the Edmonton Gold will test their
precious metal against the Vancouver North Stars in a Rugby Canada Super
League tilt on Sunday, June 27th. Kick off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at
beautiful Klahanie Park in West Vancouver. (see map)

The North Stars will grind the Gold to see if they are the real thing or

simply “fool’s gold” with a few tiny nuggets.

The match will pit two

shining examples of the best game in the world as they determine which
