Cruise into Saving 19 - Wednesday, April 18, 1990 - North Share News Don’t steer your boat like an automobile HAVE YOU ever noticed how much damage people do to their boats at marinas and boat docks? Next time you are on the water, spend a little time watching how the boat drivers approach and leave the dock. You can easily judge the knowledgeable drivers from the novice ones. Many of them have never learned that boats steer differently from automobiles, especially at slow specds. Cars steer from the front by turning the wheels, but boats steer from the rear by turning the outboard motor. Sure, you turn the steering wheel in the same direction; but, in a car, the front end goes in the di- rection the wheels are turned. In a boat, the rear end or stern moves in the op- posite direction. To turn left, the rear of a boat moves right. This is the reason so many novice boat drivers have difficulty trying to leave a dock under power. They will turn the steering wheel to the left, forcing the right rear corner of the boat into the dock, and the boat will travel the length of the dock, bumping and scraping against it, but will never pull out and away from it. The correct manoeuvre is to shift the motor into reverse and pull out or leave the dock backwards. When you have enough room, shift into forward gear. Most of today’s outboard moiors of 7Ohp and larger are equipped with a power trim and tilt feature. If you don't know the proper operating procedure and functions of this feature, consult your marine dealer and have him explain it to you. Many outboard manufacturers have a pamphlet explaining its use and advantages. Remember to enjoy boating and keep it safe.
