utch show garden
comes to Vancouver

A LITTLE picce of Holland will
be blooming in the heart of Van-
couver and five other Caqnadian
cities next month.

‘*Mini-Keukenhofs", designed
in Holland and installed by local
horticultural students, will be open
to the public in the Hudson’s Bay
Company downtown stores in
Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg,
Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal,
April 14 to May 7.

The mini-Keukenhofs are a key
element in the Bay's Fabulous
Flowers springtime promotion.
The focal point of the celebration
will be a new tulip — the Hudson’s
Bay Company tulip ~— to be
christened in Ottawa at the start of
the promotion by the Royal
Netherlands Ambassador to
Canada His Excellency Mr. J.E.F.
Breman.

The Hudson's Bay Company
tulip still is very rare — by fall
1988 there will be only 30,000
bulbs available worldwide. A stur-
dy triumph, the Bay tulip has
scarlet petals with orange/yellow
edging.

It flowers in mid-season and
stands about SO cm (20"’) tall. It is
also good for forcing.

Using a design created by Henk
Koster, Chief Architect of the
Keukenhof ~- Holland's most
famous show garden — horticul-
tural students in each of the six cit-
ies will use thousands of potted
and cut bulb flowers to create
these special gardens, measuring
about 1,000 sq. ft. each.

A wide variety of bulb flowers
will be used in the gardens. Some
of the cultivars to be included are:
“Christmas Marvel’ (single early),
“Eskilstuna’’ (double early), ‘‘Ad
Rem”’ (darwin hybrid), and

. Negrita’’ (purple, triumph)
tulips; ‘‘Cheerfulness’? (double,
bunch-flowered) ‘*Tete-a-Tete’’

(sock garden miniature), and
“Cassata’’ (orchid) narcissi, and
‘‘Jan Bos’’ (red), and ‘*Carnegie”’
(white) and ‘‘Violet Pearl*' (violet)
hyacinths. The Anemone ‘‘White
Splendor’, and Muscari ‘Early
Blue’’ will be used throughout the
six mini-Keukenhofs.

Students and faculty from the
B.C. Institute of Technology,
Landscape Architecture and
Capilano College, Plant Hor-
ticulture Department will be par-
ticipating in the program.
