8 - Wednesday, December 9, 1987 - North Shore News HOWE SCUND ill’s pollution record slammed Dear Editor: This is an open letter to Mr. Harry Cargo (mill manager at Canfor's Howe Sound pulp mill). Mr. Cargo stated on the front page of the North Shore News (Nov. 15) that his Port Mellon pulp mill was not the ‘‘main culprit’’ for putting poisonous. gases and particulate matter into our air in Howe Sound. Well, | wonder who it could be, Mr. Cargo? We have only one other pulp mill in Howe Sound and just this year, our minister of environment, the Honorable Bruce Strachan, presented them with an environmental award for ‘‘their contribution to cleaner air.’’ We’re talking about Western Pulp’s woodfibre mill, and they have just spent $220 million upgrading their plant. So, who really cares if you plan to sper.d $2.3 million this year or have sj.ent $20 million on pollution in the last nine years. The point is you (Canadian Forest Products), the biggest lumber company in the world, have just had two record years of profit-taking, and have yet to comply with our pollution. standards since receiving your permit in 1978. Alderman says thanks Dear Editor: Now that the judicial recount in the North Vancouver City election is complete, and the results known, I would like to take this opportu- nity to thank both the community . and my campaign workers for their trust and support in electing me as one of the six aldermen designated | to work for the community gocd over the period of the next three years, The decisions now facing council . can impact the community for the next 50 years. I therefore urge the electorate of the city to watch the process closely, and not confine their interest to those issues that only affect their own neighborhood. | . Ald, Frank Morris North Vancouver City There’s a lot more than $2.3 million to be spent in order to comply with your last extended variance order which expires in just seven months. The pollution levels at which you have been ordered to adhere to are the lowest minimum standards for pulp mills in B.C. and yet, since receiving your permit in 1978, there has been an amendment granted to the permit, a variance order granted to the amendment, an application for another amendment, and an ex- tended variance order, expiring June 30, 1988. Bill Rempel, the manager of Technical and Environmental Ser- vices at Woodfibre has said, ‘‘We (Woodfibre) are doing nothing (as far as polluting goes) compared to what the recovery boilers at Port Mellon are doing.’ So, I guess you better get moving and put that scrubber in recovery boiler #3 and get the scrubbers in #1 and #2 working efficiently. The minister has promised us “no more extensions or amend- ments’’ and there are just seven months to go. Why waste your energy by pointing fingers and ac- cusing others when you have your own backyard to clean up? Reg. Price $7.99 We have now grown to over 5,000 irritated citizens. We all live near or around Howe Sound, an area that has mushroomed in growth over the past few years, and a lot of us have young fami- lies. i We are concerned with the facts: * the additive effect of gases and pollutants produced by pulp mills {even at low levels) is proving to have insidious results. *the pollution of our environ- ment increases the incidence of lung cancer. . * air pollution effects are twice as harmful to the lungs as the in- halation of second-hand tobacco smoke. \ * lung cancer remains one of the least curable cancers. the District of Howe Sound ranks number one in B.C. for both male and female lung cancer deaths. 1 ethe District of, Howe Sound ranks number one in all Canada for female tung cancer deaths. * the Canadian Forest Products pulp mill at Port Mellon has and still is emitting deadly pollutants that exceed their provincial permit- ted levels and has not complied with orders issued by our Minister of Environment. We don't want to put up with this any longer. The president of Canadians Forest Products, Mr. Peter Bentley, stated: ‘‘Only poli- ticlans and policemen have power, the rest of us have respon- sibilities."’ Terry Jacks West Vancouver REAL ESTATE IS MY BUSINESS! | * MARKET CONCERNS? * BUYING OR SELLING? | | WILL FIND THE ANSWERS!
