OFFICIAL BIRD Stellar’s Jay in the lead THE LYNN Canyon Ecolugy Cen- tre has been keeping tabs on the voting for the title of B.C.’s bird, and so far the Stellar’s Jay unof- ficially feads the race. Out of 129 votes cast during the past month, 41 were for the Stellar’s Jay. The endangered Peregrin Falcon runs a not-so-close second place with 26 votes. Of the other birds, the Rufous Like the Dipper, the Steller’s Jay is found from Alaska to Central America in coniferous forests. its centre of numerical abundance is in California, while the Varied Thrush has its centre of distribu- tion in B.C., where the orange and slate-blue thrush is common in the province’s forests and at North Shore feeding stations in the winters, A few Rufous hummingbirds spend the winter at local hum- mingbird feeders, but the vast ma- jority go to Mexico and return in the spring. People wishing to vote for B.C.’s Provincial Bird should con- tact the Ecology Centre for a voting ballot, and then send it on to the Victoria counting office.
