William B. Watts has been
named governor-elect of the
Pacific Northwest District of
Kiwanis International at a
recently held district con-
vention in Richland,
Washington. He takes office
October 1 and will serve for
one year.

His jurisdiction is the
Pacific Northwest District
which includes’ Alaska,
Yukon,
Washington, Oregon, ‘the
panhandle of Idaho and the
top edge of California, with
over’ 430 clubs and over
16,000 members.

In B.C. alone Kiwanis
owns and operates’ over
$50,000,000 worth of senior

Landscaping
students get jobs

Most women probably
wouldn't think of a career in
Landscaping, but according
to instructor Brian White of
Capilano College, the
Applied Landscape Hor-
tleulture is “ideal’’ for
women, particularly single
parents. And job op-
portunities are excellent.
For the past three years the

program has had a 90 per |

cent job placement rate.

Beginning October 5, the
program will provide
_ students with the basic skills
and knowledge necessary for
a career in one of four areas:
Landscape and Grounds
Maintenance, Landscape
and Grounds Installation,
Interior Landscaping, and
Retail Garden Centres
Operations. The six month
full time course will include
study of plant nutrition and
soils, equipment § main-
tenance and operation,
pesticides and _ business
practices.

There will be a strong
emphasis on participation
and development of skills.
particularly in the areas of
site) preparation, planting
techniques, lawn in-
stallation, pruning and
grounds maintenance.
Students will be prepared for
the government
examinations leading to
certification in both
pesucide§ dispensing and
landscape application
