The staff who defied their own union to accept 11 per cent pay reductions in the hope of gaining job security, have now been awarded a nine per cent increase on the pay scales in their previous contract. The pay hike was agreed between management and negotiators of the Canadian Association of Industrial Mechanical and Allied Workers (CAIMAW) local 14 — the same union the men had threatened to break away from at the time they accepted wage cuts. The nine per cent will be implemented in two stages. Retroactive to July 1, journeymen will receive $14.18 per hour compared to their previous $13.48. wc's 1394 MAIN ST. NORTH VAN. AS - Wednesday, July 28, 1982 - North Shore News AT LIONS GATE PLYMOUTH CHRYSLER Pay-cut aut By CHRIS LLOYD When the second stage of the pay hike is implemented, on November |, they will rise to $14.75 an hour. Under the terms of the 11 per cent cut which the same employees had agreed to, they were receiving $12 an hour. Negotiations for a new contract had begun in late February. However, in late May the manager of Lions Gate Plymouth Chrysler at that time, Mike Canic, laid off two staff and told the other CAIMAW members that the company — the only Chrysler outlet on the North Shore — was doing so badly that unless they agreed to pay cuts more layoffs were inevitable. CAIMAW members were so worried about the threat facing Lions Gate that they not only agreed to take an 11 per cent cut but declared they were ready to split from the union if CAIMAW did not recognize the reduction. But when CAIMAW filed an application with the Labor Relations Board of B.C. against the company, shop se alleging unfair labor practices, Chrylser acted swiftly and decidedly. Lions Gate manager Canic suddenly found himself out of a job, Chrysler main- taining it was not renewing his contract, while Canic insisted his contract was still in effect. Wages were immediately returned to their former level, the cutbacks already made were refunded to the staff, one of the laid-off workers was reinstated, a new manager was flown out from Windsor and contract negotiations with CAIMAW resumed. CAIMAW Representative Crowther said: Staff Roger “Canic went May 31 and there was a_ substantial improvement in the at- mosphere of negotiaions after his departure.” Even so, he added: “It did not come easy.” He commented on the nine per settlement: “It’s not bad under the cir- it’s a cumstances. Over ail, reasonable settlement.” /ILPINE —988— °Present for your 1215 ¢f istening Pleasure... = 7217 SOUND— — SENSATION = —_ —__ secs, “Hear this package and understand why 7217 AM[FM- CASSETTE DECKUIN DASH @ 20WATTS PLUS 20 WATTS @ LIFE TIME WARRANTY ON HE ADS @5 STATION PRESET MODEL 6000 SPEAKERS m3 WAY SYSTEM gm OUTSTANDING REPRODUCTION Pots of tree parhing' 987 -3344 He servations strongly cecomme nded » Wdeaaee 7m % @ waneves te mye eevee /\_PINE 1s No. ! @FITS MOST MAKES ANDMODE to ON THE SPOT INSTALLATION AVAIL ABLE © NOW OPEN for Launch 11 30a m.-2:30p m .
