City tax grab move worries Burrard Yarrows

BURRARD YARROWS is
worried about North Van-
couver City council's recent
move to put the tax bite on
its Noating dry dock.
Referring to a_ request
from the City to the provin-
cial government to allow tax-
ation of the dry dock, com-

pany president J. W. Hudson
expressed “surprise and deep
concern.”

“In our view this action
amounts to reneging on
assurances previously given
to us by council and without
which we would never have
undertaken our recent

shipyard expansion project,”
Hudson wrote aldermen.
The letter was a red flag to
Alderman Gary Payne, who
told council the City could
put all its staff to work and
never find such assurances.
“No wonder they need
federal subsidies,” he said,

insisting they had gotten the
wrong impression from
council.

But a visibly angry Mayor
Jack Loucks shot back at
Payne that although no
assurances were given, n0
“fuss was made”, either.

“IT don't know why people

feel council members are
always honest and always
know the facts and
businessmen don't,” he com-
plained.

“This is obviously an emo-
tional matter,” chipped in
Alderman Bill Sorenson.

“I look at this and I say

that if a meeting (between
company representatives
and aldermen) did occur the
fact that they (aldermen)
took no action at all is
almost as if they endorsed
it.”

Council voted to receive
and file the letter.
