This was before they got fancy, paved the streets and rebuilt the old fort (tearing down the original which used to stand, padlocked and derelict, just half a block from our house). Then they added “Fort” to Macleod and waited for tourists who stayed away in droves. by Barbara McCreadie Skagway, Alaska, reminds me of Macleod, as it was in 1945. Dirt streets, board- walks and _ false-fronted stores. The closest thing they have to a high-rise is a two- storey hotel. If the whole population of the town gathered on Broadway, the main street, you'd hardly notice them. If there's no cruise ship in the harbour most of the ‘stamped Stores stay shut. After all, what local resident wants to buy a genuine porcelain ashtray (made in Taiwan) “souvenir of Skagway”? Tourists flock to the Golden North’ Hote! or the “Salmon Sourdough Shedde” (honest! The locals shake their heads and patronize the Northern Lights Cafe, en- joying REAL = sourdough, fresh fish and King crab — but only when the fish boats have come in. Brian and two of the other men from the ship decided on a “Flightseeing” ex- cursion over the nearaby glaciers. Two of the wives took a combination train and bus tour to the B.C. border and I said “See you later” and decided to prowl around by myself. Entrance fee is $1.50 (less for kids) and it is worth a visit. There are the usual amount of artifacts — many Indian but quite a respec- table collection of gold rush ~ staff. The photographs are unique, especially shots of the corpses of two famous Alaskans, Soapy Smith and Frank Reid. J.R. “Soapy” Smith was the bad guy while . Reid wore a white hat and shot him dead on the dock. Soapy died within minutes while Frank Reid hung on for a few days, drilled by the dying Smith. Guess who the hero is today? In the Eagles Hall, a troupe of actors present a show entitled “Soapy Lives” and the cruise’ ship passengers flock in. For $7.50 you can gamble with funny money from 8 to 9 p.m. and then watch the show. I've got to be honest. Out of eight of us, seven enjoyed it to‘varying degrees. I was bored out of my mind. In fact, if I hadn't been seated way back, I'd have left after the first 10 minutes. Things went downhill from there. ‘One thing I missed — and regret — is a visit to the cemetery where all sorts of pioneers, including Smith and Reid are buried. about a mile walk from the museum or a $10 cab ride. My Scottish blood rebelled at the ten bucks. If 1 were visiting Skagway again, I'd forget about the ship's tours and rent the seven-seater cab for $40 an hour.
