Hometéwn Store is one step
closer to opening on Sun-
days with the official en-
dorsement it received from

West Vancouver council
Monday night.
While the Provincial

Holiday Shopping Act allows
Sunday opening of a range of
stores serving the weekend
needs of homeowners, such
as gardening supplies, the
“failure to include home
improvement appears ... to
be an anomaly which
logically should be
corrected,” states a letter
addressed to North Van City
Mayor Jack Loucks.

The Crown Zellerbach
store is the only one of its
kind on the North Shore
“patronized in a substantial
way by residents of West
Vancouver”.

And since council felt it
unlikely that a home im-
provement centre would be
built in its municipality, “we
lend whatever support
appears appropriate,” the
draft letter continues.

Council emphasized that
the Hometown Store was an

individual exception and
should not be used to
establish West Van's

principle on the general
Sunday shopping issue.

“... this position is not
intended to indicate either
support for or opposition to
the basic issue ... and goes
no further than support for
removal of an (individual
store) from the Holiday
Shopping Act.”

But that provision isn't
satisfactory, said Alderman
George Morfitt.

To consider a_ request
from a non-resident business
when West Van _ hasn't
decided to hold a Sunday
shopping bylaw “isn't
necessary or appropriate,”
said Morfitt.
