A proposed bylaw amendment to reduce the height and lower the density of all future apartment buildings in West Van- couver’s highrise area has received mixed reaction from residents all over the municipality. At a public hearing Monday night more than 100 people crowded the council chamber to hear a number of written and spoken = sub- missions about the proposal that would put an effective end to highrises in West Van. A resident of a duplex at 2204 Bellevue Avenue, who gave his name as Munro, told council he is “a voice crying out in the wilder- ness.” “I am surrounded now by highrises, but I could not possibly build anything but a Work Pee mee ae, A oP? , re MES Ry i + 5. He said he would be relieved if the proposed bylaw amendment meant that he wouldn't have a new highrise building “peering into my back porch as well as the front.” However, Andrew Grant of Canadian International Properties, which owns 1917 Bellevue Avenue, em- phasized that lowrise development, with height restrictions of three storeys for apartments and two for townhouses as_ proposed, will result in development more towards the street, sideyards and railway tracks. “It will not only reduce the view from the street but will also reduce the quality of the streetscape. A _ highrise creates greater view op- portunities,” Grant said. Ambient will your * Grant also warned that the reduction in value of the lowrise over the highrise units could well be over 50 er cent. A resident describing himSelf as “one of the many unfortunate condominium owners” of the area also told council by letter that his block will rapidly turh into the first slum area in West Van. Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys said the municipal staff will prepare a report to be distributed to the public, which will include all submissions. The bylaw amendment would affect blocks from the 1900 to the 2200 block on Bellevue and Argyle Avenues, some parts of the 1600 block Duchess, and some areas on 16th, 17th, ‘and 18th Streets. @ AMBIENT CENTRE OF SLIMMING & SELF CARE for men and women 660 Clyde Ave West Van. ® painless hair removal e mini facials WEEKDAYS 8 am- 9 pm SATURDAY 9 am - 3 pm 926-7315 926-7316 ONE:IN-THE POCKET for - cooperation, the _ first youngsters to visit Lon- sdale Youth Centre when it _ opened Friday were (left to right) ‘Jeff Perri, John Powers, Chris Frederrick and Robert Schneewiess, all aged 14, who made straight for the pool table, watched over by organizers ‘(left to. right) Bruce - McGuigan, Greg Merrick and Janet Crawford. ‘The centre represents a group effort by local ; ; businessmen, service ~ clubs, private citizens, the Kiwanis, the Jaycees, Human Resources, North Shore Family Services and the RCMP (ian Smith photo) ‘*INCORPORATE’’ ONE DAY SERVICE GUARANTEED LOWEST RATES PHONE 926-6035 QUALITY VITAMINS DISCOUNT SAVINGS the fish...
