AFTER GOVERNMENT EXPERIMENT

WINNIPEG (UPC) - The
polar bear victimized by an
experimental dunking in
crude oil has gained in-
ternational fame by virtue of
its tenacious hold on life.

The bear - tentatively
dubbed “Survivor” by a zoo
employee who admitted he
couldn't name it officially
because “it belongs to the
government” - continues to
make progress, eating more
and becoming more active
each day as well-wishers
from across the continent
inquire after its health.

“We're getting at least 20
calls a day,” said zoo

“Our optimism is not too
great because so many things
can happen.”

‘gains international fame

more than a month following
its late February crude oil
bath, when it suffered
kidney and liver damage
after licking the oil off its
fur, as its companions in the
experiment did.

Two other bears died in
the experiment, described
by federal northern affairs
officials as an effort to learn
the effects of crude oil on
the insulating properties of
the bears’ fur.
