Heinz. Company -of- Canada Lid. Nutritional Staff. — Mrs, Hall i is co-author ofa paper produced by members of the Nutrition Department at both the food company and the University of Toronto and presented at the annual convention of the Nutritional Society of Canada held. at ™” thé University. of British Columbia on June 20. The data reported.in the presentation came from -an extensive longitudinal survey _ of infant nutrition in Toronto and Montreal, conducted by ' Canada’s _largest manufacturer of commercial baby food in close. co- operation with the National Research Council. The survey conducted. between January °1977- and February of this year was based on 403 infants and this interim report reveals fin- dings up to and including the first six months of life. Seventy-one per cent of the original 403 infants were breast-fed during the first week of life and by six months, only 21 per cent of the remaining 354 subjects __. continued to. be given milk ; _ from the breast. One of the main points in Mrs. Hall’s presentation was ‘the fact that despite recommendations by _ the medical professionals, health professionals and commercial - baby -. food manufacturers to delay the introduction of. solids, a large number of infants, both breast and bottle fed, were eating solids before the suggested time of three to four months of life. The average intake in- dicated that Canadian in- fants at this age are well fed. In spite of the gradual in- crease and change in the types of food, excessive intake of energy or an im- balance of nutrients did not occur. The study also indicated that in view of the fact that the per cent of cnergy contribution by fat at six months is close to the recommended lower limit, health professionals should take a stronger position in advising mothers away from the .use of skimmed and partially skimmed milk.
