Now she’s back living on the North Shore to shoot the new TV serics Nothing Too Good For A Cowboy. Sheila Paterson should be a familiar face to the- atre-goers and tube watchers. That is the most impor- tant thing because they need a chance to learn and grow.* Furthermore, Carrow is very adamant about actors receiving classical or theatre training even if thev're only interested in film in the long run, “Every actor needs training. 1 think it’s very important for film actors to have a background in theatre,” said Carrow. It’s also part of Carrow’s job to be honest with the pro- ducers who call on her and tell them a part cannot be cast in Vancouver if that is indeed the case. She said that is happen- ing less and less, but it is occurring — particularly with older acto here’s a limited pool here (of actors older than 50),” said Carrow. “My theory is it’s difficult to make a living here and raise a family so they’ve moved to Toronto or Los Angeles.” The younger sct just starting out has its work cut out for it. “You have to get the proper training and you also have to get an agent,” said Carrow who remembers that in 1980 there was a grand total of two agents working in Vancouver. At that time Carrow worked with them and also relied on her own files to fill casting obligations coming her way. “Now it’s impossible to keep track of people without an agent,” said Carrow, adding there are now closer to 30 actors’ agents working in Vancouver. Keeping track of people is what Levitt specializes in. In fact, her job entails a whole lot more. In the process of trying to find work for her actors, Levitt advises them on a variety of subjects including choice of wardrobe for auditions and personal training while market- ing them to casting agents and directors. When onc of her actors gets through all of chat and actually finds 3 part, Levitt will also handle the nitty-gritty of negotiating a con- tract. Asa result, once actors have an agent, their relationship undergoes 4 profound reversal. “This is a business that you need to provide a service to your clients. I work for my clients,” said Levitt. “Ef don’t employ actors, they employ me.” For the young up-and-comers, Levitt suggests starting out in a related Feld that isn’t exactly acting but may turn out to be a fantastic training ground. “One of the best ways to get into this business is to look at voice work,” said Levitt. “Volunteer at a radio station.” As for the pipe dreams of those plugging away as extras ever making it, Carrow doesn’t suggest they hold their breath. “It doesn’t often happen you're going to be upgraded (from an extra part to a contract position),” said Carrow. “That happens occasionally but it’s unlikely that that person will then get an agent and become an actor.” JEEP OWNERS: READ THIS!
