2- Sunday, November 13, 1988 — West Vancouver villager ie opened, ribbon cut. at two Seawalk celebrations CELEBRATIONS TOOK place at both ends of the West Vancouver Seawalk on Saturday, Nov. 5. At 10 a.m., the West Vancouver. Youth Band provided the musical backdrop for the official opening of the Ambleside landing at the foot of 14th Street. Construction of the $460,000 landing, which includes a plaza and fountain, fishing pier, pleasure craft boat launch and emergency boat landing float, began in the spring. A highlight of the opening was Howe Sound-Capilano MP Mary Collins’. announcement that the ing were West Vancouver Mayor Don Lanskail, several West Van- couver aldermen, West Van- couver-Howe Sound MLA John Reynolds, West Vancouver Foun- dation vice-chairman Peter Finch, Kay Meek of the Kay Meek Foun- dation and Peter Bagshaw, chair- man of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. The opening ceremonies includ- ed the unveiling of three plaques on the site: one from the Kay Meek Foundation, which donated SEE PHOTO PAGE 1 federal government will provide 50 - per cent of the $250,000 cost of a fishing pier off the landing. West Vancouver’ Director. of Parks and Recreation Frank Kurucz says construction of the 150-foot pier will likely start this spring and finish within a. few months, The municipality will make up the remaining 50 per cent of the funding needed. :° | Also in attendance at the open- $75,000 to the project, one from the West Vancouver Foundation, through which former West Van- couver. resident Roy Wrigley be- queathed to the landing $200,000, and one plaque, describing the his- tory of the site, which was unveiled by Jack Leyland, president of the West Vancouver Museum and His- torical Society. Additional project funding in- cluded $25,000 from the B.C, Lot- tery Fund. The municipality made up the remaining cost of the land- ing construction. Following the opening of the landing, dignitaries and spectators were bused to the $800,000 Seawalk extension which runs be- tween 24th and 25th Streets. That ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the completion of the western part of West Vaicouver’ Ss Seawalk. The ribbon was’ cut by Mayor Lanskail’s son Bruce Lan- skail, who cut the ribbon for the ‘first portion of the walk in 1967 when he was seven years old. Much of the ceremony took . place in Peppi’s restaurant due to the torrential downfall that took place Saturday morning. The only: remaining section of the Seawalk left incomplete is be- tween [4th and 18th Streets, where some lots are still privately owned. Kurucz estimates it will be a good | 20 years before the municipality will be able to continue the Seawalk uninterrupted through these blocks — ‘‘it’s a long pro- cess’* — but in the meantime, he says, West Van will be developing parks and trails in pockets throughout the section that will connect both halves of the walk. Property added to park reserve FOUR PROPERTIES ° on Arsyle “Avenue have officially become part of West Vancouver’s park reserve, following final adoption of the appropriate amendment bylaw at a West Vancouver District Council special meeting Nov. 2. ‘The: land at 1420, 1430, 1716 and 1734 Argyle belongs to the district, and is intended for the eventual expansion of the seawalk. The district. now’. owns three : properties in the 1400 block, eight in the 1500 block and four in the 1700 block..”’ The most recent acquisitions are the’ 2700 block properties ex- propriated’*from . the Cragg brothers. of Thorcon Enterprises - for $800,000, and the land pur- chased from the Collins family for. 900, Ald. Pat Boname was’ very pleased: to make the motion Oct. “ 31 to include these lands | ‘in the :, district’s park reserve. “This is a most signifi icant move, and one of the little things that makes this job worthwhile,” she added. Although the seawalk expansion -is well supported by West Van- couver residents, there was. some concern expressed with the ex- propriation, which will cost over $800,000. With intentions of building a duplex, the Craggs acquired the - property - when. negotiations be- tween the former owner and the municipality broke down. . A legal battle ensued between Thorcon and . the. municipality, which held to the long-term policy of acquiring the waterfront lands in Ambleside for seawalk. In the - end, the Craggs were paid $800,000 plus legal expenses for the land. - The cost of purchasing the Col- lins property was also high, but as vit borders on John Lawson Park, it is considered the most valuable lot on the block. ~ . As part of the purchase agree- ment, the Collins | will continue to live in their house, rent free, for two years. The house on the Thorcon property was torn down, however, and the land will be grassed in, as will the two new. purchases in the 1400 block. The other municipally-owned waterfront properties are being back to .the occupants. Some of the leases come due at the end of this year, while others will” fast for the lifetime of the occu- pants. | ROSE UPHOLSTERY | GRAND OPENING SPECIAL t *Re-uphoistering «All types of Furniture. 15% OFF FREE Pick-up, Delivery & Estimates 983-2281 Boat Tops & Interior * Automotive & Intorlor - Convertible Tops & Vinyl Roof La - ROSE UPHOLSTERY ! : . 1455 HUNTER ST. Argyle Avenue has become a one-way, westbound street from ‘ 13th to i6th, following a deci- sion made at a recent meeting of ‘West Vancouver District Council. There is a barrier at 14th, however, such that traffic from 13th must turn up to the north. Sixteenth street will also be one way, northbound, from Argyle Avenue to. Bellevue Avenue. “This arrangement should result in a simpler and cheaper intersection installation at [5th Street, and will allow motorists looking for parking on Argyle to drive two blocks without be- ing forced back to Bellevue,” Director of Operations Barry Lambert said in. his Oct. 17 report to council. . This is a change from the previous arrangement council authorized in May, which. per- mitted one-way Argyle traffic westbound from 13th to 15th, and eastbound from 16th to 15th.
