Municipality vies for na

WEST Vancouver’s parks
and gardens are vying
for national recognition,

West Vancouver is one of
56 municipalities to compete
in Communities in Bloom, a
nationwide contest estab-
lished Jast year as a way to
foster civic pride, environ-
mental responsibility and
beautification in communi-
ties across the country.

West Vancouver became
the provincial finalist in the
20,000 to 50,000 popula-
tion category — following
judging last Friday, bearing
out the: communities of
Campbell River and. Port
Coquitlam. National winners
will be announced at an

Judges’ decisions — are
based on each municipality’s
tidiness effort, quality of
land Jcaped areas, heritage
conservation, urban forestry
development and floral
arrangements. Points are also
awarded for environmental
effort and community
involvement.

West Vancouver’s parks
superintendent Bill Reid said
he felt his community had a
good chance at the nationals.

“I think they certainly -
were impressed,” he said of.
