Members of the Queen Mary Parent Advisory Council planted the seed of an idea for a garden 1% years ago. They'll see it blossom tomorrow, June. I. when the community. turns out for the offi- cial ground breaking. _ Over the next two years, the grassy boule- vard at Chesterfield Avenue and West Keith Road will-be developed for school and com- munity use. The City of North Vancouver donated the '100- -square-yard (84 sq.m) plot adjacent to . the school grounds and has pledged up to $10,000 in grants to help fund the communi- ty garden, said Queen Mary Parent Advisory Council president James Knowles. .. The garden will be designed with input from school children, teachers, parents and the community at large, said Knowles. Native plants to attract birds and butter- flies, a gazebo, benches and community plots are some of the features being dis- cussed. “The teachers are excited about building garden projects into curriculums for science, nature and art studies,” said school principal Mary Brewer. “And the children will play a part in saying what they would like to have there.” The community is welcome to attend the ground-breaking tomorrow at 10 a.m. Volunteers are asked to wear work gloves and bring a rake or shovel to help in the building of compost boxes and garden paths.
