Seymour Falls Dam seismic job limits site access A SEISMIC upgrade al the Seymour Falls Dam will keep cyclers, walkers and rollerbladers at bay weekdays until mid-November. By Kate Zimmerman News Reporter Contractors are currently mobiliz- ing their trailers on the site and access to the public will be denied on the read between the Rice Lake Gate and the slab-and-buttress Seymour Falls Dam from Mondays through Fridays. “We'll be pouring concrete walls bewween the existing buttresses,” said Mike Boss, project engineer with the Greater Vancouver Water District. The walls will be poured perpen- dicular to the existing buttresses, lending the dam additional stability in the event ef a major earthquake. The dam is fairly secure at pre- sent and wouid withstand a sizeable earthquake, Boss said. but each dam upgrade is intended to fortify the structure. if the dam were to collapse as a result of an earthquake, the residen- tial and commercial area near the lower portions of the Seymour River could be flooded and there would also be an environmental impact on the canyon. The seismic upgrade is being completed in stages. Boss said, with this first phase siated to be complet- ed by mid-November. It is expected to cost the residents of the Greater Vancouver Regional 66 The dam is fairly secure at present and would withstand a sizeable earthquake... 9? District (GVRD) $2.4 million. The GVRD is currently looking into where it is going to oblain an increased source of water — whether from the Seymour, Capilano or Coquitlam reservoirs. The Seymour Falls Dam current- ly gets 40% of its water from the Seymour reservoir, 40% from the Capilano reservoir, and 20% from the Coquitlam reservoir. The difference in cost between getting water from Seymour. Capilano or Coquitlam has yet to be assessed. Coquitlam might scem the cheap- est source except that the water there is also used by B.C. Hydro for hydro power, which could affect its price. “We want to look at the most cost-effective solution.” said Boss. The next phase of the upgrade would involve either building a whole new dam or further bracing the existing stricture. If the GVRD goes ithead with all of the upgrading, the projected cosi to taxpayers is $20 million.
