We've all heard that "sound."

it's remarkable how well a muf-
fler or series of mufflers can reduce
engine noise by treating the turbu-
lence that causes it,

Another, even more vital pur-
pose of the muffler is to transfer the
noxious fumes to the back of the
car, so that they don't filter up and
poison the unsuspecting driver and
passengers inside.

Of late, the muffler exhaust sys-
tern has developed a third, equally
important purpose, namely to
reduce the toxins in the exhaust
before they are emitted into our
atmosphere.

Exhaust usually contains gases
that have not been completely con-
sumed in the running of the engine.

With the help of a catalytic con-
verter, those fumes are heated up to
extreme temperatures and burned
efficiently,

According to Dale Reibin of the
local Midas Muffler and Brake
Shops, the byproducts of this sys-
tem are not as harmful! as what
older cars emit.
