Conway, meanwhile, is modest -about “his victory and is assured covthat he didn’t win ‘‘just because i was a guy.” And jokes about be- ing .“‘Miss North Shore” don’t faze him. The critics were impressed not - only with Conway’s artistic pres- entation, but also by his speech, which Todd describes as ‘‘fan- tastic.’’ . With tact and diplomacy, Con- way commented on the historical precedent the contest was setting and the changes that it represented in society. Although in the past few years,. the ‘“‘pageant’’ had focused on ability and not beauty, the public had continued to see it that way, says Conway. . ‘*Opening the contest to gentlemen. is an eye-opener for entlemen because the women can now be judged on inner beauty and their ability to be an am- bassador to the community,’’ Conway observes. LAST WEEK ZAP! asked what you thought of the idea of making some areas of Lynn Canyon off-limits to swim- ming. I think some of the areas of Lynn Canyon should be off- limits because even if the children have learned the ways of the water in Lyna Canyon, accidents cun still happen and they can stitl die. If that visitor thing is true... but it doesn’t matter — an accident is an ac- cident and a death is a death. I think there should be off limits. I've never been down there and I won't go diving down there because I know how dangerous it is. The kids may think ‘I’ve done it before - and lived’ and then do it again, but next time they might hit their head on a rock or get caught under rapids. It’s just a matter of timing. .
