THE FLORIDA trial of William Kennedy Smith charg-
ed with rape of a 30-year-old woman in March has
“Gulf War’’
coverage. Before the alleged rape, the 30-year-old neph-
ew of Senator Ted Kennedy was a little-known member
of the Kennedy clan, referred to by some as the United
States’ unofficial royal family. American tabloid and

taboo of naming an alleged rape victim has been broken «
on several occasions by national U.S. press outlets.

Since the trial recently began, Canadian and other in--
ternational press outlets have joined the U.S. media and
