WHEN [was six, my
mother, like countless
others, enrolled her daugh-
ter in ballet classes.

Like aimost every other
school-aged girl in the early 6605, |
dragged myself to classes every
week, tights, slippers, cucu and all.

Every time [, or any other of
the tiny bailevinas struck an incor-
rect pose, we were rewarded with
a painful poke from our
wheeichais-bound instructor, Mrs.
Goddard.

Sometimes | can still feet the
sting on my ankles when [ recall!
her dreaded teaching stick.

To be truthful, they weren't
especialy fond memories, which is
why I felt a tremendous pang of
jealousy after talking to a former
student of long-time Lynn Valley
dance instructor, Doreen Graat.

“She's a wonderful, warm, lov-
ing teacher who taught us dancing
and all sorts of things about fife
as well," said Alison Hext of
Grant, who studied with her for
16 years.

There are a whole battalion of
women out there who will
remember this determined woman
who retired from teaching in June
after 40 years.
