8 ~ Friday, September 20, 1991 - North Shore News Group claims Seymour old- growth trees threatened THE WESTERN Canada Wilderness Committee (WCWC) claims the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) is poised to destroy a stand of old-growth trees near the North Shore’s Seymour Demonstration Forest, but the GVWD is calling the matter a non-issue. WCWC says the stand, located near the Seymour River dam, con- tains (rees estimated (o be between 700 and 1,000 years old. The area, they say, is slated for logging in 1992, with roadwork to begin within the next weeks. But Ed Hamaguchi, ad- ministratoc of watershed management with the GVWD, says that all logging within the watershed area is under review, and that no roadbuilding for the area mentioned by WCWC is scheduled. **We are very concerned about the ecological inventory of old- growth within the watershed,” said Hamaguchi, noting that significant old-growth stands have been documented in a study that has been taking place over the past three years. Randy Stoltmann, author of Hiking Guide to the Big Trees of By Peggy Trendell-Whittaker News Reporter Southwestern B.C., says the old- growth stand under discussion is especially important because of its proximity to an urban area, mak- ing it an excellent educational and research resource. But while Hamaguchi agrees that natural educational areas are important, he points out that the trees Stoltmann is referring to are within the watershed drainage area and, as such, closed to public ac- cess. Hamaguchi says all logging operations within the North Shore watersheds are being reviewed fol- Jowing the findings of a recent teport suggesting that logging in the watersheds has a negative im- pact on drinking water quality.
