In the Greater Vancouver area, the majority of burn injuries to children under six years old is from scald burns. The following tips will help you to protect your children from being burned in your home. SCALD BURNS Continuous and adequate supervision of young children is the single most imporant measure necessary tO prevent a variety of injuries, including scald burns. Before placing a child into the bath or getting into the tub yourself, test the temperature of the water. The temperature can be tested by moving the hand rapidly through the water for several se- OR TTS H N Church, WEST VANCOUVER UNITED MINISTERS: Rev. John Gouws Rev. The temperature should not exceed 102°F. Run cold water into the bathtub first and then add hot water to adjust the temperature. This will reduce the risk of a child contac- ting very hot water should he fall into the water while the tub is be- ing filled. Adjust the thermostat setting cn water heaters to produce a temperature of 130°F or less. The lower the temperature, the tower the risk. Give the child a washcioth to hold while bathing the child, and face the child away from the faucet handles. This will take his attention away from the faucets and reduce the risk of his turning on the hot water during the bathing activity. Clearly mark the hot water set- ting on single valve units (mixing valves) and turn the valve to the cold setting after filling the tub. This will reduce the risk of ac- cidentally introducing hot water into the tub. Never leave a very young child unattended in the bath. If you must leave, take the child out of the tub and take nim with you. This will heip reduce the risk of the child’s gain- ing access to the bathroom when he has no need to be in that area. (This reduces the risk of scald burns, contact with chemicals, as well as other potential risks associated with the bathroom.) As the child grows older, (each him to tum the cold water on first, then the hot. When turning off, turn hot water off first, then the cold. KITCHEN SAFETY Continuous and adequate supervision of children in the kitchen is of prime importance. As a child's mobility and curiosi- iy increasc, appropriate supervi- sion becomes esseniial. Test all heated food before giv- ing to a child or placing it within his reach, Keep the child at a safe distance from all hot items by using playpens, highchairs, etc. Create a safe 2one for children. Keep pot handles turned in or to the back of the stove. Use pot holders. Keep chiidren out of the ‘‘traf- fic path’? and check for their whereabouts before moving any hot ot heavy item. Avoid déep-fat cooking when young children are present. Hot fai or grease and oils may reach temperatures over 490°F during cooking. Contact with a liquid at this temperature would cause a full thickness injury instantly and the temperature would remain for an extended period of time, as compared to water. Remove tablecloths and placemats where toddlers are present in the home. They wg and pull on everything within their reach. Hot or heavy items can easily be pulled off a surface, fall- ing on top of the child. Control young children's mobil- ity when they are in the kitchen and food is being prepared. Highchairs, feeding tables, playpens, etc, can contro! the child’s movements and allow supervision during daily kitchen activities. Establish a ‘‘safe area’? or “zone” in the kitchen. This is an area where a child may stay free from risk while in the kitchen.
