CORNISH HOUSE still has its original straight and cross-leaded win- dows. Its current owner marvels at the workmanship of the brackets supporting the overhang. The styled piece at right angles is fitted using no plugs or nails. 1914 TUDOR REVIVAL HOME A NORTH LONSDALE TREASURE ONE DAY, North Vancouver resident Bob Clarke looked out his living room window and saw 40 people staring back at him. It turns out they were on a tour of heritage homes run by the North Shore Historical Society and Clarke’s 76-year-old home, at 3190 St. Georges, was on the itinerary. The home, which Clarke named ‘Salopia’ after his English grand- father’s country home, is referred to in the North Vancouver District heritage inventory as the Cornish House. It was built in 1914 as a show home by Benjamin John Commish, of Cornish and Cooper contractors, who built many homes in the North Lonsdale area. By BARBARA BLACK News Reporter According to Clarke, the foun- dation for the house was dug out by a horse team. “Tiere was a stone quarry close to where the house was built, and these stones were used to build the founda- tion.’ He laughs, adding that the foundation is ‘‘like a bastille — it's 18 inches to two feet thick!’” Other notable features include Tudor revival styling, broadwood framed windows and distinctive in- NEWS photos Cindy Goodman REFERRED TO in the North Vancouver District heritage inventory as Cornish House, this stately heritage home was named Salopia by its current owner Bob Clarke after his grandfather’s English country home. What Clarke finds remarkable are the brackets supporting the overhang (see photo). ‘‘They’re so tightly fitted that there are no plugs or nails (on the right angle supporting piece). The perfect balance of weight allows them io stay there. It’s remarkable workmanship.”’ Also unique are the _ house’s straight and cross-leaded windows. Owner of Cornish House for 19 years, Clarke enthuses,‘‘! loved it from the moment I saw it. When I used to come to the church (across the street) J would look at it, but | never dreamed I'd live in it.’’ Cornish House is located in the North Lonsdale Historical District, which contains a significant con- centration of historic buildings. It is not yet officially designated a heritage site (nor are any other buildings in the district), since the district is waiting for the release of a B.C. government proposal on heritage sites. Says Hope Burns of the North Vancouver District Planning Department, ‘‘We're waiting for the provincial white paper before we go ahead, because it will affect the designation pro- cess.’’ According to Burns, the government is proposing a heritage zoning category be created in each municipality. Copies of the North Vancouver District heritage inventory are available in North Vancouver libraries or can be purchased from the district planning department at a cost of $5: Phone the district hall at 987-7131.
