She does uot know what she wants io do when she graduates. Now, in Grade 11, the school counsellor is suggesting that she should consider taking 2 block of Work Experi- ence. How would it benefit her to take Work Experience? Would it mean that .she would miss any im- portsnt classes? Answer: Regardless of ability, your daughter will be able to expe- rience a variety of jobs that might appeal to her. She will iearn about the qualities such as responsibility, attitude and reliability that are im- portant to employers. She will be able to see how a job site func- tions, and how she may or may not fit into such a workplace. Work Experience will help her to leara about jobs, and increase her awareness about the world at work. This program will comple- ment her schoo! program and takes place during and/or after school hours. It will not interfere with her other school work. Your daughter will have the opportunity to un- derstand the relationship between education, skills training and work, and she will also get a credit towards her high school gradua- tion for her Work Experience course. Question: My daughter, at pres- ent 2 Grade 4 stadent, tells me that prayer reading doesn’t take place in ber school. I had always thought that every school was obliged by law to hold prayer reading. Answer: You are correct in thinking that under the School Act prayer reading is obligatory. How- ever, a New School Act is in the process of preparation and should soon become law. Under this pro- posed new Act prayer reading is not mentioned at all and is therefore no longer compulsory. It seems that, in practice, many of the schools in British Columbia have already discontinued the Practice of prayer reading, due in Part to the multidenominational nature of our society. Question: My son, who will be entering Grade 9 in September, was involved in a serious automobile accident in Febsusry and will be confined to a wheelchair for the forzseeabie feture. I was wondering what fa- ciilties are provided for wheelchair HEY HONEY! Says here, the weather is going to be nice the next couple of days. Should we have that garage sale we’ve been talking about? Even the busiest people students in the high school and whether my son will de forced to move to another school. I feel thet to have to go to a new school would be very traumatic for my son at this stage of his recovery. LIFESTYLES Answer: A school district must provide a wheelchair accessible fa- cility within its district. This does not necessarily mean that your loca) high school will be suitable for a wheelchair student. While most schools have made reason- able efforts to accommodate dis- abled students it is simply not fea- sible to adapt some of the older buildings. However, ail new school Suildings and new additions ta ald buildings must, by law, be fully wheelchair accessible. eke The North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre, a United Way agency, is located at 1060 Roosevelt Cres., North Vancouver, B.C.
