CRAIGDARROCH CASTLE, century creftsmanship. Now. a new book by author Terry Reksten, Craigdarroch — The Story of Dunsmuir Castle, chronicles the history of the build- ing that has been everything from the- most expensive residence in Western Canada to the grand prize in a very strange lottery. Between these extremes Craigdarroch has served as a hos- pital, a college, a2 conservatory of music, and a movie set. Designed as the home of mil- lionaire’ coal baron Kobert Dunsmuir (who unfortunately died before his dream castle was finish- ed), Craigdarroch was the most expensive private residence in Western Canada until 1909, That year, the Dunsmuir family sold the estate to a private developer who made the castle the prize in a lot- tery so unusual it was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. After serving as a hospital for veterans of the ‘Great War, Craigdarroch housed Victoria Col- lege from 1921 to 1946. - One of a number of well known alumni is Pierre Berton, who made his -first foray into fiction (reprinted in Craigdarroch) in the college newspaper. - Berton also whiled away a few aimless moments carving his name so deeply into the building’s ex- quisite panelling that he remains the “king of castle graffiti.”* No visit to Victoria is complete without a stop at Craigdarroch. This architectu-al wonder of 19th century craftsman.uip and detail features the finest collection of residential stained-glass win- dows in Western Canada. And the spectacular view of Vic- toria and the Straits of Juan de Fuca from the castle’s turret is well worth the climb of 87 stairs. A castle tour will only whet the appetite of those who long to know the whole story.
