40 - Sanday, January 17, 1988 - North Shore News Deere BOARD PROFILE: Jack Bright Go west young man! And like a lot of young men, he did. Twenty-five years later, with a score of feathers in his cap, current North Shore Credit Union Board President Jack Bright has no regrets. But before Jack Bright arrived on the West Coast in 1966, he stopped off in Banff, Alberta, and managed a ski facility there for five years. Five good years to temper the Montreal- native's spirit and prepare him for the final leg of his journey; five important years to give him the background and experience necessary to meet his first real challenge after relocating in British Columbia. Jack worked as the Area Manager for Whistler Mountain from ‘67 to 77 but even before the decade had elapsed, his personal drive and ambition could not be contained. By 1975, be was building a hotel — a million and a half dollar project call- ed the Whistler Inn (currently the Whistler Resort Club). Today, the 50-year-old entrepreneur looks back and solemnly vows: “fd never do that again.” Not that the project wasn't a suc- cess; rather, Jack's remark is pro- mpted by the wisdom acquired after more than 30 years in business: “I in- vested everything | had, everything | owned in that project.” Today, like any good businessman, he recognizes the folly of putting all your eggs in one basket — “and especially when it's a high-risk venture.” Typically, North Shore Credit Union was the only financial institu- tion willing to lend him the money to finance the project. But that dicin't sur- ‘prise him very much either. As far _ back as 1971, he had bought his home in Whistler with the help of a North Shore Credit Union mortgage — “They were the only institution that The Board of Directors of North Shore Community Credit Union has declared a , dividend of Equity Shares equivalent to a rate: of -- per annum calculated on the minimum monthly ' balance for the fourth quarter of 1987. .Dividends were paid as of January 1, 1988 as an additional allocation of Equity Shares or in cash if Equity Shares equal $1000.00. NEW SERVICE CHARGES IN’88 ' Every ‘year, in order to keep a balance between providing the best range of services to our members and . the cost of providing that service, we review our service charge structure. This year, we've been able to “hold the line” in most cases, however, an in- crease in our costs to provide some services has made it necessary for us .to adjust some of our service charges upwards. That’s the bad news. The good news is that any adjustments made were minimal. In fact, a quick survey of other financial institutions’ service charges will confirm that our charges are very competitive and in most cases, lower than average. And the good news gets better! puepsserecscneeisne ings tis Soe Sea MAB ORS NL ACOMOE North Shore Credit Union passes sav- ings on to members in the form of rebates and credits whenever automated technology is utilized for transactions. Our rebates and credits in addition to already highly cornpetitive service charges translate into unbeatable rates in the industry. Theyii take care of you, if you're prepared to be reasonable.” His wife Ann, a partner in the hotel development, ran the hotel until they sold it in 1980 and with serious con- sideration for their two boys’ educa tion, moved down to the lower mainiand and purchased a home in West Vancouver. In 1981, North Shore Credit Union CEO Ron Davies asked Jack if he was interested in serving on the Board of Directors. “I felt | should.” recalls Jack. “They had helped me tn my career and besides, | wanted something.” “There was a real need for a finan- cial institution to serve the communi- ty of Whistler. I was a key player in bringing North Shore Credit Union on board,” admits Jack. Jack Bright was elected Vice Presi- dent of the Board in 1984, the year North Shore Credit Union first open- ed a branch in Whistler, and was elected Board President the following year. The stable of real estate and development companies he owns to- day — Whistler Blackcomb Manage- ment, Snosun Ventures Ltd.. Olym- pic Holdings, Whistler Inn Inc. and CPI-Olympic reflect a similar pattern of achievement and enterprise in his private business world. “Today J get involved where I want to get involved,” insists Jack. But even though he claims to be semi-retired since 1980, the North Shore Credit Union Board President has a difficult time staying in the background. For instance, he couldn't resist working as Project Manager for the construction of the new Whistler Village Gate House completed in December last year, home of Whistler’s new North Shore Credit Union branch. And for a man who should be spending more time enyoying his 46' yacht, he freely concedes that “lately | haven't had much time to do that.” dack recognizes the successful merger of Harbour Savings with North Shore Credit Union and the affirma- tion of North Shore's commitment to Whistler with the building of the new branch as the two most important developments during his period as President. “The amalgamation «ith Harbour Savings broadened our members’ scope and there is still more room for growth,” he hints with caution: “As long as any future growth doesn’t im- pact negatively on the communities we already serve.” “We're getting the job done,” insists dack Bright ir retrospect. “Tensions that existed in the past are dissolving and the Board is pulling together more in the same direction these last three to four years.” And don't expect to see Jack's familiar face around this winter. He’s been drafted! Drafted by the Winter Olympics in Calgary, that is, to con- tribute his expertise during the Games. The President of North Shore Credit Union will be back on his old stomping grounds from mid-January to the end of February, so you've got to believe the Winter Games should run pretty smoothly. Whistler Opening North Shore Credit Union celebrated the official opening of its new Whistler Branch on December 3, 1987. “The third opening in as many years; noted Branch Manager, Anderson. Although, judging from the quality and size of the newest location, it is unlikely there will be another opening necessary next year. With extended banking hours and a new six-day week, the new Whistler Branch reflects NSCU's solid commitment to the community of Whistler. Open for Business, Officially! Scissors in hand, Whistler Mayor Drew Meredith shakes Branch Manager Sandy Anderson's hand after cutting money-ribbon to officially open the mew branch. Mayor Meredith later donated the money-ribbon to the local Dandelion Daycare Centre.
