Road Less Travelled: MIKE STEELE book reviewer Now, since this is after all a book-review column, there must be a link between the opening paragraph and a book of some sort. Well, there is, Can a book do justice to one of those ‘special’ experiences? Can prose and photographs, ink and « color capture on a flat page the unique flavor of what is after all subjective and therefore abstract? Surprisingly the answer is ‘yes’ and that book is Share the Flame. The 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, were virtually an _ anticlimax to the 88 days which ‘ preceeded them. The lighting of * the Olympic Flame on Feb, 13 was the culmination of an Olympic Torch run that involved 7,000 Ca- nadian women, men and children -‘ in an 18, 000-kilometre odyssey that began in Newfoundland on Nov. 17, 1987. The hundreds of color photographs are technically superb but more than that they - present a tableau of Canada and Canadians, Whether we par- ticipated directly.in the run or cheered the runners on from the - sidelines (or from our living rooms) this event meant something to us. Maybe that something was a sense of involvement or (and it hurts a dedicated cynic to say this) pride in who and what we are. There are those who will say that this was a run engineered bya large corporation with a keen cye for public relations. There are those who will snidely point out . that the Olympic torches were fab- ricated from re-cycled beer cans. There are those who will decry _ what tlicy see'as the manipulation of people and the-media to’ ensure that the Olympics were a commer- cial success through sustained free advertising. Ro.
